Customs police in southern China detained 18 suspects who allegedly smuggled edible bird's nests, which are highly prized for their unproven nutritional value.

Customs of the city of Shantou, in southeastern Guangdong province, said that about 300 kilograms of bird's nests have been seized yesterday in southern provinces of Guangdong, Fujian and Guangxi. Eight smuggling gangs were uncovered.

Customs police said buyers had purchased bird's nests in Indonesia and Malaysia since 2018, and gangs had later smuggled these to China through border cities of Pingxiang and Nanning, capital of Guangxi.

Shantou customs said that the gangs were involved in smuggling around 160 tons of bird's nests, worth 2 billion yuan. They are suspected of evading taxes worth 320 million yuan.
