A rare 88.22 carat, oval shaped diamond was sold at auction in Hong Kong for HK$108 million, Sotheby's Asia said today, which noted that it was the largest to be auctioned in more than five years.

Pursued by three bidders, the diamond surpassed the estimate of HK$88-HK$100 million and established a price per carat of HK$1.22 million.

The 242-carat rough stone which yielded the diamond was found in Botswana in the mine of Jwaneng, owned in partnership by De Beers and the government of Botswana and known for producing roughs of the highest quality, Sotheby's said.
