Bill to charge 200pc special rate on unleased flats in the works

A bill to amend the Rating Ordinance (Cap 116) to impose special rates on first-hand private residential units tha have not been rented out for more than six months within a year will be introduced to LegCo within 2018-19 legislative session, the Secretary for Transport and Housing, Frank Chan Fan, said today.

"Special Rates" will be collected by the Rating and Valuation Department annually at two times, that is 200 percent, of the rateable value of the units.

The government is now listening to the views of the legislators and various sectors in the community, Chan said.
