HK feels minor jolt from Taiwan quake

The Hong Kong Observatory says that an earthquake of magnitude 5.9 occurred at 7:57 a.m. today in Taiwan Strait and had been felt in Hong Kong.

The HKO said it received near a thousand locally felt reports of this earth tremor, the duration of which was a few seconds. Initial estimate gave a local intensity of four on the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale, that is hanging objects swing. windows, dishes, doors rattle.

The epicenter is located near 23.36N, 118.57E, about 470 kilometers east-northeast of Hong Kong.

The Central Weather Bureau said the earthquake's epicenter was located at sea about 101.9 kilometers west of Penghu county hall, at a depth of 20.5 km.

The earthquake's highest intensity, which gauges the actual effect of a temblor, was highest in Penghu, Kinmen, Tainan, Yunlin, Chiayi and Changhua, where it measured 3 on Taiwan's 7-tiered intensity scale.
