Pan-dems tussle for West Kowloon gains

Voters in Kowloon West go to the polls on Sunday in a by-election that will determine the strength of the rival camps in Legco for the next two years.

Observers think the pro-government side is likely to grab the seat. If they do, they will keep their majority in the directly-elected seats, something they have enjoyed since the disqualification of six pro-democracy councilors over their oath-taking, RTHK reports.

But if the pan-dems can take the seat once again, the rival camps will each have 17 lawmakers in the geographical constituencies.

A possible spanner in the works, however, is the fact that two pan-democratic veterans are standing in the poll, something that may well tip the balance in favour of their rivals.
