A school in Tuen Mun which has an outbreak of hand, foot, and mouth disease said today that the illness was mostly among its track and field team members.

Nine students of Po Leung Kuk Fong Wong Kam Chuen Primary School have been infected and a 11-year-old is in hospital in a critical condition, RTHK reports.

Classes for those in primary 5 and 6 have been suspended, and the school said that all competitions and training involving primary 3 to 6 students will be cancelled.

But some parents are urging the school to be closed instead of the partial suspension of classes, even though the school's move was recommended by the Health Department.

Worried parents said they believe classes should be suspended for all students, because some classrooms for younger students are located on the same floor as those for primary 5 and 6 students.

Temperature checks were done on all students and hands were disinfected before they entered the school compound.
