Two technicians jailed for faking mega bridge concrete tests

Two technicians were jailed for 21 and 23 months respectively today for faking tests on concrete used in the construction of the new bridge to Macau and Zhuhai, RTHK reports.

Chiu Chi-hing and Poon Ka-wai earlier pleaded guilty to conspiracy to defraud.

They admitted dishonestly changing the time and date of tests on concrete samples, as part of a bid to trick government officials into believing that pressure tests had been carried out as per the requirements.

They also pleaded guilty to having replaced concrete to be checked with earlier samples that had already passed the tests.

The District Court heard that Chiu and Poon worked at a lab contractor for the Civil Engineering and Development Department.

A number of others have already been jailed over the scam after the ICAC laid charges against 18 people last year.-Photo: RTHK
