Transport expert Hung Wing-tat said he does not think the opening of the bridge to Macau and Zhuhai will cause traffic congestion in Tung Chung as he does not expect a lot of traffic coming through initially, RTHK.

An opening ceremony for the bridge will be held on Tuesday in Zhuhai, expected to be attended by President Xi Jinping. Concerns have been raised over congestion in Tung Chung area due to this as a road linking the bridge to a port area off Chek Lap Kok is delayed a year.

Hung, a fellow of the Hong Kong Society of Transportation Studies, said the major users of the bridge would be trade transport vehicles. But due to the ongoing trade spat between China and the United States, this transport sector is dropping and there won't be many vehicles using this bridge in the coming months, he said.

He also said the back-up road has plenty of capacity for the rest of the traffic till the new road is opened.
