Typhoon Kong-rey blows into southern Japan

Typhoon Kong-rey is battering Japan's south. At least 10 people have been injured. It's the second storm to hit the region in less than a week.

The typhoon is moving north over the sea. It has caused blackouts in some areas, NHK reports

Okinawa Electric Power Company says about 3000 households are currently without power in Okinawa. Officials in one town have ordered residents to evacuate to an emergency shelter.

In the Amami Islands in Kagoshima Prefecture, nearly 9,000 households have no power.

Heavy downpours are also affecting parts of the southwestern islands of Kyushu and Shikoku.

Weather officials are warning people to watch out for rain storms, strong winds, high waves, mudslides, and floods.

Airlines have announced the cancellation of more than 100 domestic flights to and from Okinawa.

Most ferry services in the region have been suspended.
