Chan Ho-tin concerned over political screening

The convenor of Hong Kong National party Chan Ho-tin said today that he is disappointed about the court decision, saying the judgement would give too much power to the returning officer.

"It does mean that the returning officer has a right to screen the candidates politically, according to their political stance, or even their minds or thoughts," he said.

Chan said he hopes to bring the case to Hong Kong's top court, but he admitted that the situation is bleak for his appeal, as well as to other candidates who hold similar political views as him.

He said he will consult his lawyers before taking a decision on an appeal.

A member of Chan's legal team, Mark Daley, said judgement is "another decision that trivializes fundamental rights such as freedom of expression and the rights to vote and stand for election".

"With the centrality of the 2016 Interpretation used to justify the decision, Hong Kong is again deviating from the international norms on the issue," he said.-RTHK
