Retired cop released on bail after sentenced to jail for hitting pedestrian with baton

Retired Cop Franklin Chu King-wai has been released on bail after he was sentenced to three months' imprisonment at the Eastern Magistrates' Courts today for assaulting a passer-by during the Occupy protests in Mong Kok.

The 58-year-old former police superintendent was caught on video hitting pedestrian Osman Cheng Chung-han with a baton on November 26 in 2014.

Chu was granted a HK$50,000 cash bail pending appeal.

Police arrested Chu on March 27 last year - more than 800 days after the incident.

He pleaded not guilty to one count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
